Bistro 2110 at the Blackwell Hotel on campus features surprisingly good food. Maybe it's not fair to be surprised, because the Blackwell is a very nice hotel - the nicest in the area. But it's run by the state of Ohio, so I expected institutional caterer quality food. Not so.

Bistro 2110 serves 3 audiences: hotel guests, who are sort of captives; attendees of executive workshops at Pfahl Hall, and the occasional neighbor who just happens by. I was in the latter group.

When I had offices nearby at Ackerman Place, I used to recommend the Blackwell to out of town visitors. I had lots of breakfast and lunches there. I was always surprised at the food quality. Yes, a big proportion of people eat from the buffet line, which is not bad and super fast. But they have a menu too, and some pretty good stuff, and the prices aren't bad. And it's a very nice space, with lots of sunlight.

I went for lunch today with an old colleague and we had two separate sandwiches, both of which were really good. i had the steak sandwich, which was marinated, grilled beef sirloin served open faced on toasted
sourdough bread topped with sautéed mushrooms and potato hash, crumbled bleu cheese, au jus and crisp fried onions. It was rich but delicious. My friend had the Smoked Turkey and Brie, made from warm house smoked turkey breast, melted brie cheese, marinated arugula, sliced tomato, crisp bacon and whole grain mustard aioli on toasted 12 grain bread. It was big and juicy and sloppy. My friend was 91, usually can't finish half a sandwich, and he gobbled this one down.

They have a breakfast sandwich that is also delicious.

A downside to Bistro 2110 is the service. They could use a visit from Cameron Mitchell or the Doody Bothers to fix their operations side of the house. Everything seems to take forever, and they are clearly pushing you towards the buffet line.

One last thing - valet parking is free, a really nice feature when it's 95 or 15 degrees.
