Starliner Clone Improves On a Good Thing
The former head chef of Starliner Diner opened this Cuban/Mexican gem about a year ago, and it's been a winner since the day it opened. It has been so successful they are about to open their second store at Kingsdale Plaza in Arlington.
LouiE's Grill Fusion Restaurant is a true family run business. Luis and his cousin are the owners, both restaurant veterans, and their wives and kids are involved at the restaurant daily.
The place is nothing fancy but open and airy, and surprisingly large. There are booths against one wall, and a pretty good sized bar area. Every day they post the daily specials on a little chalkboard at the front of the restaurant and at the bar. The handwriting is almost illegible but that adds to the quaintness and local independent flair.
The regular menu is extensive and full of favorites. They have a huge Tex-Mex oriented brunch menu. They have sandwiches including a media noche, burgers of all types, and a po-boy chicken sandwich. Entrees are a litttle pricey, and include chicken or steak fajitas, Louie's Jambalaya, and a couple of pork dishes. You can also have salads, several differnet kinds of burritos, and a kids menu.
I had the daily special which was fish tacos. the fish was lightly breaded and fried, tucked in a corn tortilla with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and some delightful chipotle sauce. Delicious, especially with the black beans and rice. I ordered some Jambalaya to go, which we will have tonight.
There are scattered reports of bad service but they were pretty busy today and doing a good job. The prices are a little high for a Hilliard strip center family-run cafe, but people definitely seem to like their food.
Happy hour from 4-87 M-F. Live music Wednesday.
